JB Hi-Fi × Shopify — the merchant-independence call.
Amazon was walking into Australia. JB Hi-Fi’s exec team had five questions and a January deadline. We were the operators they picked to answer them.
Ninety days. Three tracks: strategic response, ecosystem mapping, mobile enterprise. Alongside Cloudery’s Rafer Ounjian and JB Hi-Fi’s James Saretta, we ran the 2017 engagement that built the six-columns-of-ecommerce framework and made an early, non-consensus call: Shopify, not Enterprise commerce, not SaaS.
Seven years later, JB Hi-Fi migrated to Shopify. Online moved from ~A$200M to A$1B+. Category share went from 5% to 15%. New Zealand ecommerce grew 50%. Shopify wrote it up as one of their flagship enterprise case studies.
The engagement was $150K. The outcome was a billion-dollar business line. That’s the ratio we’re still working from — and the reason the triad (Gammill at NXP, Ounjian at Everything Machines, Saretta as NXP advisor) is still working together.
